Today, I’m thrilled to welcome two incredibly talented facial plastic surgeons: Dr. Peter Ciolek and Dr. Francis Papay! They’ll be shedding light on the innovative, multidisciplinary approach we take at Cleveland Clinic in cosmetic facial plastic surgery. Gentlemen, welcome to the show!
Peter Ciolek: Thanks for having us, Paul!
Francis Papay: It’s great to be here!
Paul Bryson: Before we jump into the exciting innovations you both are pioneering, let’s have each of you share a bit about your backgrounds. Tell our listeners where you’re from, your training paths, and what brought you to Cleveland Clinic.
Peter Ciolek: Absolutely! I’m a proud Clevelander, born and raised here. I completed my residency in Head and Neck Surgery at Cleveland Clinic, followed by a fellowship in facial plastics and reconstructive surgery in Philadelphia. Since 2019, I’ve been providing a comprehensive range of facial plastic services, from cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty to reconstructive surgeries for aging faces, cancer, and facial paralysis.
Paul Bryson: Fantastic! And Dr. Papay?
Francis Papay: I’m another Ohio native, hailing from the Oberlin area. After completing my otolaryngology training here, I pursued a plastic surgery fellowship and then a craniofacial fellowship in Switzerland and Utah. My expertise lies in facial aesthetics and addressing pediatric craniofacial deformities.
Paul Bryson: It’s clear both of you bring invaluable experience! When people think of cosmetic surgery, they often picture rhinoplasty, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. For our listeners—whether you’re a potential patient or curious about facial plastic surgery—what common conditions do you treat, and how have these procedures evolved in your careers?
Peter Ciolek: Here at Cleveland Clinic, we offer an extensive array of facial cosmetic procedures. From Botox and fillers to more extensive surgeries like facelifts and neck lifts, we have it all covered! The landscape has shifted significantly; more people are embracing facial aesthetics, partly due to the influence of social media. We’re seeing younger patients—some in their twenties—coming in for preventative treatments like Botox and fillers, and even rhinoplasties.
Francis Papay: I completely agree. With platforms like TikTok, younger audiences are increasingly exploring cosmetic options. The trend is moving toward minimally invasive and even micro-invasive techniques. We’re also integrating advanced methods such as fat transfers and AI-driven imaging to improve precision and patient outcomes.
Paul Bryson: What an exciting time to be in this field! As we delve into personalized medicine, how can patients expect their experience to unfold at Landerbrook or other facilities? What does the multidisciplinary approach look like?
Francis Papay: Depending on the specific concerns brought in by the patient, we aim for a thorough understanding of their goals and expectations. Our multidisciplinary team comprises surgeons, dermatologists, and anti-aging specialists, all working together to provide a holistic view of the patient’s aesthetic needs.
Paul Bryson: That’s fantastic! And what strategies do you recommend for balancing patient outcomes and their expectations?
Peter Ciolek: It all begins with listening. The first moments of a consultation are critical for understanding what the patient is truly seeking. It’s essential to align their expectations with what can realistically be achieved.
Paul Bryson: In this digital age, how has technology influenced patient expectations and outcomes?
Francis Papay: Social media plays a significant role in shaping self-esteem and beauty ideals. Trends evolve rapidly, and the images portrayed online often set unrealistic standards that can impact our patients’ perceptions.
Peter Ciolek: Technology can indeed be a double-edged sword. Patients often arrive with heavily edited images, leading to complex conversations about realistic results. The impact of social media on self-image is a fascinating yet challenging aspect of our practice.
Paul Bryson: Now, shifting gears to the reconstructive side—what are some of the more challenging cases you both encounter?
Peter Ciolek: A key element in cosmetic surgery is an in-depth understanding of anatomy, particularly in reconstructive cases. Whether it’s nasal reconstructions or restoring function after trauma, having a solid grasp on anatomical nuances is crucial for success.
Francis Papay: Absolutely! Each case poses unique challenges, and I often learn something new with every reconstructive procedure. It’s all about blending functional and aesthetic outcomes while preventing complications.
Paul Bryson: Let’s talk innovation—what advances in technology are enhancing your practices today?
Peter Ciolek: In rhinoplasty, there’s a growing focus on preserving natural structures rather than just reducing them. This has led to improved long-term aesthetic and functional outcomes. We’re now utilizing powered tools that minimize swelling and bruising during procedures, enhancing recovery.
Francis Papay: And in facial aesthetics, innovative micro-invasive techniques are emerging, transforming the landscape of cosmetic procedures. Each year brings something new that allows us to achieve better results with less downtime.
Paul Bryson: It’s evident that the future is bright for facial aesthetics! Before we wrap up, any last thoughts for our listeners eager to learn more?
Peter Ciolek: To anyone considering surgery, prioritize finding a surgeon you trust—one who listens and has a wealth of experience. Make sure you’re completely comfortable before taking the plunge.
Francis Papay: I echo that sentiment! Never hesitate to ask questions—understanding your options and outcomes is crucial for a successful experience.
