For countless dental professionals, the ultimate reward is witnessing the radiant smiles of satisfied patients. But for Annie Juergens, every beaming grin represents something far greater—a sense of achievement that transcends the appointment itself. It’s about forging healthier habits and empowering children to care for their teeth independently.

As a passionate Registered Dental Hygienist with Northwest Colorado Health, Juergens operates the groundbreaking mobile unit that brings essential dental care right to the schools in Moffat and Routt counties. With an astounding reach, she serves between 3,500 and 4,000 kids each school year, providing care at places like Steamboat Springs, Hayden, and the Boys & Girls Club of Craig.

Exciting changes are on the horizon for dental care in Craig schools, and the demand for the mobile unit is surging in South Routt and Meeker. “I affectionately call it ‘The Bus,’ but really, it’s more like a box truck,” Juergens laughs, recalling the evolution of the mobile unit since its inception just three years ago.

“Dental care is expanding rapidly in our area, and I’ve had the privilege to lead many of these advancements. It’s been incredibly rewarding,” she adds with enthusiasm. “Now, parents can miss less work, and kids can spend more time in class—everyone wins!”

Hailing from Craig and a proud Moffat County High School graduate, Juergens found her calling in dentistry after exploring various college programs. With a mother as a dental hygienist and a father as a physical therapist, her path was virtually set. She secured her accreditation through Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangely.

Annie Juergens, armed with her trusty toothbrush and jaw model, is dedicated to fostering healthy smiles in her community. With nearly seven years at Northwest Colorado Health, she’s making a real difference.

It was about six years ago when Juergens first pitched the idea of a mobile dental team to her supervisors after witnessing a similar program thriving in Denver. “I said, ‘I have no idea why we aren’t doing this, but we really need to!’” she recounts. While she humbly downplays her role, it’s clear that her spark ignited a movement that has transformed local dental care.

The mobile unit brings vital services such as X-rays, cleanings, temporary fillings, and sealants straight to young patients. Juergens aims to alleviate fears surrounding dental care, making it easier for kids to voice their needs. “I want to be an advocate for these children. We have multiple avenues to support them,” she emphasizes, highlighting her commitment to overcoming barriers like financial hardships and language differences that can hinder oral health.

Juergens takes immense pride in the success stories she’s cultivated. “I’ve heard from parents about how their kids come home excited and eager to share their experiences. They’re not scared anymore; they run up to me in the halls for a high-five!” she beams. “Earning the trust of parents means the world to me—knowing they rely on us for their child’s health is a privilege I cherish.”

Dr. Madeline Connick, the dental director at Northwest Colorado Health, praises Juergens and her colleague, Alyssa Conner, as the “bedrock” of the mobile unit. “Their passion drives this project. It’s essential to have that kind of dedication,” she notes, commending Juergens for her pivotal role in establishing a school-based program in the region.

While Juergens has extensive experience with adults, she now focuses almost exclusively on children and loves every moment of it. “Working solely with kids has stolen my heart. The more I help them, the more I want to do,” she reflects, grateful for the opportunity to prioritize what truly matters to her.

Balancing her career with motherhood, Juergens also accommodates her 18-month-old son, Cohen, in her work schedule. “Having my own child opened my eyes to the significance of caring for kids,” she explains. “It’s always been fulfilling, but my love for all children has grown even deeper since becoming a mom.”

After moving back to Craig seven years ago with her husband, Brent, Juergens rediscovered her passion for her hometown. “Craig is home,” she affirms. “It’s what you make of it, and I feel blessed to be part of so many positive aspects that make us want to settle down here. We’re building our lives here, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Juergens is eager to further engage with her community, recently joining the planning committee for Cowboy Christmas to create memorable experiences for local kids. “I adore small towns—the sense of community and belonging is unparalleled. I’m committed to helping Craig grow,” she says with a bright smile.
