As entrepreneurs, we’re often in a whirlwind of tasks, moving at lightning speed, which makes it all too easy to overlook how our mindset and mental health can steer our business in one direction or another. The way we talk to ourselves, the way we treat ourselves—these elements can either propel us forward or hold us back. And let’s be real: our mindset doesn’t only affect us; it radiates out and influences everyone around us.

If we’re running on fumes, paralyzed by the fear of failure, or consumed by worries about the future of our ventures, we’re not just missing out on golden opportunities; we’re also failing to show up as the incredible leaders our teams deserve.

I’ve navigated my own mental health journey through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Prioritizing my mental well-being opened my eyes to a powerful truth: the right mindset can be the rocket fuel you need to elevate your business.

Here’s what I’ve discovered after more than 18 years in the entrepreneurial trenches.

Listen to Your Gut

Let’s face it—making decisions as an entrepreneur is no walk in the park. You’re bombarded with choices every single day, each one carrying the weight of your business’s future. And while input from others can be valuable, it can also lead you astray if you let it drown out your own intuition.

Back in 2017, my co-founder Brendan Schwartz and I faced a massive decision: sell our company, Wistia. Everyone around us was convinced it was the golden ticket. But instead of rushing to accept the offer, we took a step back. We prioritized what felt right for our team and our vision. The result? We turned down the offer, took on $17.3 million in debt, bought out our investors, and seized full control of Wistia. And guess what? We paid it off last year!

When making tough choices, I always ask myself: what decision will allow me to sleep peacefully at night? Trust me; your gut usually knows best.

To cultivate this gut instinct, you must embrace failure as a learning tool. The faster you get comfortable with the risks, the more robust your intuition will become. Remember, innovation is the heart of progress, and taking risks is part of that journey.

Embrace a Positive Mindset

Here’s a mantra I swear by: “No one ever got rich by listing reasons for why they’re wrong.”

In the challenging world of startups, it’s easy to slip into negativity. I get it. But after years of experience, I’ve found two key strategies to keep my spirits high:

First, a fresh perspective can work wonders. Sometimes, you just need someone to help you reframe your situation. Reach out to someone outside your company who’s been cheering you on—they can provide the validation you didn’t know you needed.

Second, don’t underestimate the power of exercise. Our mental and physical states are closely linked, and breaking a sweat can work miracles for our mood. Next time you think of skipping your workout to get ahead on work, remember: investing in your physical health pays dividends for your mental clarity.

When you foster a positive mindset, tackling challenges becomes easier, and your productivity soars. So, choose movement over stagnation, and watch your results skyrocket.

Stay Emotionally Present

We often hear that living in the present is essential, but as entrepreneurs, we’re constantly strategizing for the future. So how do we balance that?

For me, the answer lies in staying emotionally present. This practice helps me avoid spiraling into anxiety about the future or dwelling on past mistakes. Acknowledge your emotions and let them pass without judgment.

Sure, it’s easier said than done, but recognizing that worrying about the uncontrollable is futile can help. Focus on what you can control instead.

Meditation has also been a game-changer for me. It calms my racing thoughts and reduces stress. I once committed to meditating for 500 consecutive days, and it completely transformed my approach to challenges.

Finally, carve out time to think. As entrepreneurs, we need to tackle each day with confidence, positivity, and presence. If your internal narrative leans towards negativity, this is your chance for a mindset shift.

Believe that you can attract good fortune in both business and life. Stay in the game long enough to manifest those lucky breaks. Persistence is key, and soon enough, the conditions for your success will align. Just give it time!
