Menopause and Oral Health
A staggering 84% of women aged 50 and older are unaware of the oral health implications of menopause, according to a national study.

Get ready for some eye-opening news! This year, an estimated 500,000 women in Washington state will experience menopause, yet a shocking 84% of those over 50 remain oblivious to its critical connection to oral health, as revealed by a recent national study.

This research, commissioned by a leading dental organization, sheds light on the hormonal fluctuations that accompany menopause, which can lead to serious oral health issues like gum disease, dry mouth, and even tooth loss. These vital insights are explored in the groundbreaking documentary, “The (M) Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause,” which premiered on PBS just last month in honor of World Menopause Day.

Understanding the link between menopause and oral health is not just important—it’s essential. As hormone levels fluctuate, your body undergoes changes that can significantly affect saliva production, the mouth’s ability to manage healthy bacteria, and ultimately your overall health.

According to findings from the documentary, more than 30% of women will lose a tooth within just the first five years of menopause. This underscores the necessity of diligent home care and regular dental visits to safeguard your oral health during this transformative time.

Oral health is crucial at any stage of life, but for those navigating menopause, awareness of how this transition impacts oral health—and vice versa—is paramount. The oral cavity isn’t immune to the ripple effects of menopause; however, many women remain completely unaware of this connection.

The study also highlighted that 70% of women over 50 have reported experiencing at least one of the following symptoms since entering menopause:

  • Dry mouth
  • Receding gum lines
  • Increased tooth sensitivity, pain, or decay
  • Reduced saliva production
  • Bleeding gums
  • Altered gum texture
  • Burning sensations on the tongue

In response to this urgent need for awareness, a special 13-minute version of “The (M) Factor” has been released, aimed at breaking the silence surrounding menopause and its impact on oral health.

Remarkably, only 2% of women over 50 have broached the subject of menopause with their dentist, and a mere 1% have discussed it with their dental hygienist. It’s time for dental professionals to proactively address this topic with patients entering or experiencing menopause. The hormonal changes during this phase can escalate risks like jawbone loss, dry mouth, and gum disease. Regular dental check-ups can be vital for identifying and managing these issues, promoting better oral and overall health.

Produced by innovative companies dedicated to women’s health, “The (M) Factor” features insights from medical experts, health advocates, and key figures in the menopause movement. As Denise Pines, executive producer, aptly states, “Despite being a universal experience, menopause has too often been cloaked in silence and misunderstanding. The expertise shared by dental professionals in ‘The (M) Factor’ is crucial for fostering education and dialogue on this pivotal moment in women’s lives.”
