UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Search: New Job Listing Sparks Speculation!
Social media has been buzzing with shocking claims that UnitedHealthcare quickly posted a job listing for a new CEO just one day after the tragic shooting of its former CEO, Brian Thompson, in New York City.
In a harrowing event, a masked assailant fatally shot Brian Thompson, the leader of one of the largest health insurance companies in the U.S., right outside a hotel in Manhattan where UnitedHealthcare was hosting its investor conference on December 4. Authorities are currently in pursuit of the shooter.
Just a day later, a viral TikTok video insinuated that UnitedHealthcare was already on the hunt for a replacement, claiming they had posted a CEO job listing on LinkedIn within 24 hours of Thompson’s untimely death.
The purported job listing describes a full-time, remote role based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, with a salary range of $300,000 to $450,000. Another TikTok further fueled the fire, alleging that the same position was also advertised on Indeed.
As the TikTok views skyrocketed, many viewers expressed disbelief, questioning if UnitedHealthcare really rushed to fill the CEO position so soon after a tragedy.
THE BIG QUESTION
Did UnitedHealthcare really post a job listing for a new CEO just one day after the death of Brian Thompson?
THE REVEAL
No, UnitedHealthcare did NOT list a job opening for a new CEO the day after Brian Thompson’s tragic shooting.
WHAT WE UNCOVERED
Despite the claims circulating on social media, UnitedHealthcare did not post a job listing for a new CEO immediately following the devastating event involving Brian Thompson on December 4.
UnitedHealthcare, the largest subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group based in Minnetonka, Minnesota, saw Thompson lead the company for a remarkable 20 years before his promotion to CEO in April 2021, following his success with the Medicare and retirement division.
On December 6, our team investigated the latest job postings on UnitedHealthcare’s official LinkedIn and Indeed pages. We found no evidence of a new CEO listing, nor was there a posting on UnitedHealth Group’s official careers site.
The salary range mentioned in the viral TikTok is also significantly lower than Thompson’s actual compensation.
In fact, Thompson’s total earnings in 2023, including salary, bonuses, and stock options, reached approximately $10.2 million, positioning him among the highest-paid executives in the company.
Peter Deragon, a managing director at Stanton Chase, highlighted that most companies don’t typically advertise CEO positions on platforms like LinkedIn or Indeed.
“C-suite executives aren’t looking for jobs in the traditional sense. They are often approached by companies in need of their expertise,” Deragon explained.
Liz Ryan, CEO of Human Workplace, echoed this sentiment, stating that high-level executives don’t secure roles through online applications or resume uploads.
“They don’t job hunt that way because it’s not effective,” Ryan noted in a recent post.
We reached out to UnitedHealthcare for a statement but received no response by publication time.
