Bold Moves: Top Job Search Tips from Engineering & CS Alumni!

By Your Inside Scoop on Baylor!

This past Tuesday evening, the buzzing halls of the Rogers Engineering and Computer Science building were alive with opportunity! Baylor University’s Career Center rolled out the red carpet for an exclusive alumni panel and networking event tailored just for the engineering and computer science department. This event isn’t just a one-off; it’s the first of a series designed to empower each academic department at Baylor!

The spotlight shone on a diverse group of 12 dynamic Baylor ECS alumni, from recent graduates to those who navigated the job market pre-COVID. These trailblazers shared invaluable insights on how to land that dream job post-graduation and make the most of the treasures Baylor has to offer.

One crucial takeaway? It’s all about marketing yourself effectively. Mario Lopes Martinez, one of our standout panelists, passionately encouraged attendees to be “proud and loud” when showcasing their skills and experiences.

“Take a lot of pride in the work you do in class,” Martinez advised, his enthusiasm palpable. “People can feel your excitement, especially recruiters. I want to collaborate with someone who shares the same passion as my team.”

The panelists unanimously agreed: confidence blossoms through practice. It’s not just about landing that ideal job; it’s about seizing every opportunity to polish your pitch. Even if a particular job doesn’t spark joy, approaching recruiters with a well-crafted elevator pitch and a polished resume will set you up for success down the line.

Want a taste of that practice? Look no further than Baylor’s upcoming career fair! Tiffani Weir, another inspiring panelist, credits her career success to this very event.

“I attended the career fair, engaged with [the company], and navigated the interview process all through Baylor,” Weir shared. “It was super convenient with recruiters coming to campus, allowing me to secure a full-time offer seamlessly.”

Finding your passion is key, too! Juliana Snyder, another panelist, highlighted her involvement in American Sign Language (ASL) as a pivotal experience.

“It had nothing to do with engineering, but it became a fun fact that made me stand out in interviews,” Snyder explained.

Martinez pointed out that Baylor’s size is a unique advantage, allowing students to dive into activities and leadership roles without fierce competition.

“Involvement in small clubs offers a treasure trove of skills that you won’t always find in a traditional classroom,” added panelist Bryce McWhirter. “These experiences are invaluable!”

At Baylor, the sky’s the limit for student involvement! Whether tackling design projects, collaborating on research, or launching new clubs, every experience shapes the skills employers are seeking.

Mark your calendars! The Career Center is hosting a campus-wide career fair from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on October 2 at the Mark and Paula Hurd Welcome Center. This is your chance to network like a pro and set the stage for your future!
