Meet the Couple Who Retired Early in ’91 and Never Looked Back!
In 1989, Billy and Akaisha Kaderli boldly broke free from the traditional grind to embrace the exhilarating world of early retirement. Their story is not just a personal triumph; it’s an inspiring beacon for anyone dreaming of a life beyond the 9-to-5.
“We were working ourselves to the bone,” Billy recalls, reflecting on a time when the daily hustle felt more like a prison than a job. They realized that waiting until a conventional retirement age to enjoy life wasn’t an option. Instead, they took matters into their own hands.
Once a French chef running a bustling restaurant in Santa Cruz, California, Billy transitioned into investment banking after burning out from the kitchen chaos. “It was one of the easiest jobs I ever did,” he admits, but soon, the couple’s focus shifted to something bigger: their financial freedom.
The Kaderlis meticulously analyzed their finances, investing wisely and tracking every penny spent. “We realized we had enough at that time,” Billy says, a moment that set the stage for a life-changing decision.
After two years of strategic planning, they officially stepped into retirement in 1991 at age 38, armed with $500,000 in investments. Adjusted for inflation, that nest egg would be nearly $1.2 million today—a testament to their foresight.
Long before the FIRE movement (Financial Independence, Retire Early) gained traction, the Kaderlis were trailblazers. Their journey began in a time when the internet was just finding its footing, making their story even more remarkable.
“We were overwhelmed with obligations—work, bills, and a competitive lifestyle in California,” Akaisha shares. “We craved something different, something that aligned with our freedom-oriented mindset.”
Fast forward three decades, and the Kaderlis are living proof that retirement can be an adventure, not a destination. They’ve traversed the globe, documenting their thrilling escapades on their blog, while navigating the ups and downs of life without ever regretting their bold choice.
‘You Own Your Life’
There’s a common myth that retirement equals boredom, but Akaisha quickly debunks that notion.
That’s why the Kaderlis proudly describe themselves as “financially independent” rather than “early retirees.” They didn’t just want to escape the daily grind; they desired the freedom to choose how they spend their precious time.
“You get to pick what you want to do—whether it’s teaching, exploring the globe, or pursuing a passion,” Akaisha passionately states. “You truly own your time. You own your life.”
“Once you achieve financial independence, you can live life on your own terms,” Billy adds, with a glint of excitement in his eyes.
‘It’s a Lifestyle, Not a Vacation’
Their retirement isn’t about endless lounging; it’s a vibrant lifestyle filled with exploration and learning. The Kaderlis have roamed far and wide, immersing themselves in diverse cultures, savoring exotic cuisines, and chronicling their adventures in books and online.
“It’s a lifestyle, not a vacation,” Billy emphasizes. “We enjoy settling into new areas, making friends, and truly experiencing local life.”
Over the years, they’ve called many places home, from the beaches of Thailand to the lush landscapes of Guatemala and even the idyllic island of Nevis. They’ve maintained a cozy rented apartment in Chapala, Mexico, for seven years now, returning as often as possible.
“We’ve always been driven by curiosity—wanting to try new foods and meet interesting people,” shares Akaisha, whose background in anthropology fuels her adventurous spirit.
‘We Like to Call the Shots’
The journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Injuries and health issues have surfaced, requiring the couple to seek the best medical care available. This year, Akaisha faced stage 3 breast cancer, prompting a return to Mexico for treatment.
“We’ve embraced medical tourism wherever we go, and it’s worked out well for us,” Billy assures, showcasing their resilience.
Ultimately, financial independence has granted them the freedom to continually redefine their lives. “It just keeps getting better,” Akaisha expresses with a smile.
Thanks to their smart investments, they are living the long, fulfilling retirement they envisioned over 30 years ago.
“We love being in control, choosing our destinations, and staying as long as we desire,” Akaisha concludes. “Retirement has made us more adaptable—physically, mentally, and emotionally. We’ve truly seen the world.”
